Monkey Magic – Brooks’ 2nd Birthday Bash

It has become a June highlight to  to work with our dearest, Molly Sims, for her sweet boy Brooks’, 2nd birthday. This year, we worked with Molly and her team to come up with creative projects that we could all make together.  Brooks’ current obsession du jour (it goes in spurts with the wee ones) Curious George,  for obvious reasons, who doesn’t love that mischievous primate?  So Molly decided to create a party with some monkey magic. Some of the elements were:

A colorful paper flower sign to welcome the guests.

A real live  Curious George! And a make-your-own yellow hat station -sponsored by Yoobi, an amazing new company that donates school supplies to classrooms. For every Yoobi product purchased, a Yoobi item will be donated to a classroom in need across the US.

One of our favorite elements was a recent new discovery by the YOA team.  What better to accompany a Curious George party than mini frozen bananas?!  Or any party for that matter. Hannah’s Bananas, a mini food truck available for private events in Los Angeles and surrounding areas, is the most  adorable vintage truck, called the “Boho-Nana”, get it??   With an attached end table and banana shaped stools, Hannah’s Bananas was a hit!

Mad for Mad Men

We were lucky enough to do a phenomenal party recently — it was a 60th birthday party with a swanky 1960s theme (think “Mad Men”). We already loved the TV show, so we were so excited to be able to do a party based on it. The party was held at the birthday gal’s home in Santa Monica. We transformed a tent in her front yard into a moody supper club complete with custom banquette seating, wood paneling, 1960s-era wallpaper, and authentic sconces and wood-veneer chandeliers.

No detail was left out. Guests were welcomed into the tent by a tuxedo-clad greeter, candy cigarettes were passed out by a tray-toting cigarette girl, and framed headshots of 1960s stars were “signed” with birthday wishes. There was even an Arne Jacobsen egg chair in the photobooth…amazing.

Our favorite part of the party, though, were the hilarious and moving surprise videos, which were played on an oversized plasma screen that had been framed out to look like an old-fashioned tv set. To our surprise, and the surprise of many guests, one video showed that the birthday gal and her loving partner had gotten married the night before — after 25 years together!
